That sounds really neat actually
Scales made of some kind of crystalline nano-material that changes its structure in response to impacts, and the stronger the hit the longer the solidification lasts
And while probably completely unrelated to your ideas, it makes me think of neat stuff>dragons are actually an interstellar species that propagates by entering a state of suspended animation and drifting through space for aeons until eventually falling onto a planet, surviving the literally meteoric impact by virtue of their fancy scales, but the force of the impact locks them in place for centuries, eventually getting covered over by dirt and grasses>eventually they can move again and burst free in a shower of earth and terrified sheep>this is where the "that hill is actually a dragon" legends come from
Yeah it makes no sense at all, but I like settings do neat stuff with blending fantasy settings and science fiction style worldbuilding.
